The connection between dental anxiety and sedation dentistry is well documented and has come a long way. Sedatives in dentistry are highly effective at helping calm patients with dental anxiety, allowing all manner of dental services to be adequately and effectively administered to the patient. With sedation dentistry, it is possible for a patient to overcome the effects of dental anxiety for a successful treatment.

The most common form of sedation dentistry is laughing gas, which is a gas administered in the form of nitrous oxide and oxygen directly to the patient. This can help ease their stress and allow the patient to feel much calmer and relaxed. For deeper levels of sedation, more effective forms of treatment can be given.

Sedatives given orally for ingestion often require one hour in advance to work. With pill sedatives, the dosage can be easily monitored and given to achieve the level of sedation necessary, ranging from mild relaxation to a complete sleep. For faster-acting treatments, sedatives can be injected directly into the bloodstream. For a deep sleep, sedatives such as anesthesia are given to make sure a patient will remain asleep until the sedative has worn off.
